Wismut GmbH – a federal company in Saxony and Thuringia
The shareholder of Wismut GmbH is the Federal Republic of Germany, represented by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection. The administrative headquarter is located in Chemnitz. The remediation areas Aue, Königstein and Ronneburg ensure the implementation of the remediation projects on site.
Wismut GmbH is divided into two main divisions: the Technical Division and the Employee and Administrative Division.
This structure ensures a clear division of responsibilities and enables smooth cooperation between all departments.
A total of around 770 employees currently work at Wismut GmbH and are facing one of the greatest ecological and technical challenges with the remediation of the uranium mining legacy.

Abandoned Wismut sites
The so-called abandoned Wismut sites in Saxony were not covered by the provisions of the 1991 Wismut Act and are therefore not the responsibility of Wismut GmbH for remediation.

An administrative agreement between the federal government and the Free State of Saxony in 2003 and two subsequent extensions provided funds for the remediation of the old sites in Saxony until 2035. Wismut GmbH took over the project management and implements the remediation steps.
Wismut foundation
In 2021, Wismut GmbH founded a subsidiary, the Wismut Stiftung gGmbH. The company is financed by the federal government and the two states of Saxony and Thuringia and is dedicated to the “legacy of Wismut”.
