For People and the Environment

Since 1991, Wismut GmbH has stood for responsibility and sustainability. As a federally owned company, we are tasked with securing and rehabilitating the legacies of uranium ore mining in Saxony and Thuringia.

Good to know

From destroyed landscapes to polluted air and water resources – the challenges were immense. Today, most radioactive residues such as open mines, mine dumps, tailings ponds, and an open pit mine have been rehabilitated, but they still remain under their covers. Even after the completion of the remediation work, we face challenging tasks that will accompany us for many years to come.

Our Tasks

Our tasks for the future include the long-term treatment of contaminated waters, monitoring, professionally maintaining, and servicing the rehabilitated areas. In doing so, we always keep an eye on the environmental impacts and the safety of the surface.

Our mission is clear: We want to preserve the rehabilitated landscapes and newly created habitats and sustainably improve environmental conditions. Taking responsibility is not a single act for us, but an ongoing process. We develop solutions to provide people in this region with a safe and healthy environment.

Outlook

The tasks of the future are challenging and will occupy many generations. We are determined to deploy the necessary material, human and financial resources to successfully master these long-term projects. The federal government continues to support us with the necessary funds, so that we can continue to work with commitment and expertise in the future.
