Everything good at the end?
The legacy of uranium ore mining posed enormous challenges: destroyed landscapes, polluted air and water resources and radioactive residues such as pits, dumps, sludge ponds and an open-cast mine. Today, we are proud of the results of our work.
Responsibility for generations
Safe areas that are prepared for future use, clean water that meets environmental standards, new ecosystems that have been carefully brought into balance: our aim is not only to repair existing damage, but also to promote new habitats and development opportunities for the region.
By 2024, a total of approx. 2450 hectares out of a total of 2750 hectares and 4 pits had been remediated.
Even though most of the legacies are now under protective covers, our responsibility does not end with the completion of core remediation.

Long-term tasks for a sustainable future
After the remediation, important work to maintain the high safety standards must be continued: In particular, water management in pits, at tailings management facilities and stockpiles, as well as the monitoring and maintenance of remediated areas. Our central tasks include
- the collection and treatment of contaminated water,
- monitoring and professional care of the remediated areas,
- ensuring the stability and safety of the surface,
- the preservation of newly created habitats. Nebenbestimmungen und Auflagen rechtlich geregelt. Mit einem klaren Fokus auf Umwelt und Sicherheit setzen wir alles daran, die Region dauerhaft zu schützen.
These tasks are legally regulated by official permits, ancillary provisions and conditions. With a clear focus on the environment and safety, we do everything we can to protect the region in the long term.
Innovative approaches and the highest standards – an ongoing process
For Wismut GmbH, remediation is not a complete act, but an ongoing process. Our responsibility for people and nature in the mining regions guides our actions. With a clear focus on safety, sustainability, and environmental protection, we develop solutions that ensure a livable future for the people of the region.
